The Society Events

Every year in April, the Morrison Society, in association with the Loughton Festival, celebrates
the life and writing of Arthur Morrison.
Events have previously included:
2007: Loughton Festival Talk by Stan Newens
2008: Exhibition about Morrison, and a walk through Loughton and High Beach
2009: Talk by Tim Clark, British Museum about Morrison's Japanese Prints
2010: Exhibition and readings during a performance about Dickens and his contempories. Also an art event at High Beach Church.
2011: ‘The Perilous Depths’ – Philanthropy and 'Slumming'in Arthur Morrison's East End. Talk by Eliza Cubitt, University College London
This event that was due to be performed on Friday 20 April 2012 has been cancelled. It is hoped that it can be performed later this year.
Arthur Morrison, his music and his friends.
A programme of readings by Morrison and some other writers of his time. It is also a programme of popular music that he would have known and perhaps sung to.
Arthur Morrison was a writer of stories about people who lived in the slums of London. He lived in Loughton and is buried at High Beach. His books often had similar themes to Dickens, and his detective novels introduce Martin Hewitt, and were described as being a successor to Sherlock Holmes.
